5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Home

Is winter weather making your home feel a little drab? If your space is in need of a refresh, I’ve got you covered with five easy ways to refresh your home.

Most of them are free, but if you’re looking for a few new things, I’ve rounded up some beautiful pieces below.

ONE: Start with a deep cleaning.

January is the perfect time to clean up and clean out. My house tends to get cluttered during the holidays, but I don’t mind it because i know I can start fresh in January.

If this task feels too overwhelming, tackle one room or task at a time. Set a timer for 15-20 minutes a few times a day. You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish if you break down a big task into smaller, more doable steps.

Create three piles: keep, trash, and donate. Also, check out your neighborhood groups for any “freecycle” opportunities. This weekend, I purged several games, puzzles, and home decor items that my family had outgrown. It was as easy as setting them out on my front porch for another neighborhood family to use.

TWO: Organize.

Some people come by this naturally. For others, it can be a challenge—especially if you have children. If you find yourself in the second boat, start small.

When you walk into your home, what area do you see first? Maybe it’s the foyer; maybe it’s the mud room. Start organizing there. You’ll notice the impact right away.

While it can be nice to have your attic in order, no one sees it. But if you cook regularly, an organized kitchen and pantry will make cooking easier and less stressful.

THREE: Rearrange.

This is an easy and FREE way to make your space feel new. Rearrange your furniture in the spaces you use most—likely your living room or bedrooms.

Switch up your home decor and accessories. If you’re up for a challenge, pull all of your accessories into one spot, like your dining room table. Take stock of what you have, and then redistribute items to different rooms. Rearrange your lamps, artwork, mirrors, and knickknacks. Rearrange your bookshelves. The smallest changes can breathe new life into a room.

FOUR: Fresh flowers.

It’s amazing how fresh flowers can brighten up a room. You don’t have to spend a fortune to make a big impact.

I treat myself to grocery store flowers (usually hydrangeas) regularly, and they make my kitchen island feel happier. Change the water daily to keep them fresher longer. Mine usually last 10-14 days.

FIVE: Treat yourself to new accessories.

You don’t need a big budget for this, and it’s not hard to find beautiful home decor for a reasonable price. Some of my favorite pieces come from Amazon.

Faux cashmere throw: I have two of these and highly recommend. They come in several colors and are only $20, but look and feel much more expensive.

Black and white tray: This would add a fun pop to a coffee table, island, or dresser. Trays are a great way to corral several items like books, picture frames, and flower arrangements.

Coffee table books: These books are simply beautiful and feature gorgeous photography of some amazing places. They pack a big punch on a bookshelf or coffee table, and they’re a little pricey as a result. If you want a budget option, you’re in luck…keep reading.

Acrylic book stand: I love this for displaying a favorite cookbook in the kitchen.

Marble lazy susan: This is pretty and practical. I use this lazy susan to hold our salt, pepper, oils, honey, and whatever else we want to keep close by in the kitchen.

Lacquer trays: My sister found these, and I love them. They come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. I have the oval emerald one on my island (see first pic above) and people always ask about it.

Marble bookends: These are simple and stylish and come in several colors. Every bookshelf needs a set of bookends.

Velvet pillow covers: I have these on almost every bed in my home. They look custom made, but for a fraction of the cost. They come in several beautiful colors, and the secret to making them look expensive is to stuff them with pillow forms that are 2 inches bigger than the covers. I use 26 inch covers filled with 28 inch pillows.

Faux books: These are genius. They’re dupes of the more expensive books above, but come in a set of four (for only $25) and they’re hollow—perfect for storing small items.

Tulip wreath: A post about refreshing your home wouldn’t be complete without THE tulip wreath. This is a forever favorite and adds the perfect pop of color to your front door.

Glass knots: I love this for styling a bookshelf. Also in several colors and under $30.
